International Tapas Day is a worldwide celebration which takes places every 15th of June. This year, the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Korea in collaboration with the Embassy of Spain in South Korea, Turespaña, British Airways and Foods and Wines from Spain to honour the Spanish gastronomy organized a light brunch at the Spanish Ambassador’s Residence. The highlight of the event was the tapas contest which was held during the event to find out the best tapa of 2018 in South Korea.
His Excellency, Ambassador Gonzalo Ortiz, kindly offered his residence in Seoul to host the event. Among the guests, we could find, besides the staff from the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Korea and the Spanish Embassy in South Korea, great Spanish public representatives such as Mr. Antonio Estévez, Commercial and Economic Counsellor of the Embassy of Spain in Korea. Furthermore, representatives from Spanish companies working in Korea along with Korean media and well-known bloggers attended the event.
As we mentioned above, the tapas contest was one of the highlights of the day. Five of the best Spanish restaurants in Seoul participated on the 2018 Tapas Contest. All the chefs surprised the guests with innovative as well as traditional tapas to win the Best 2018 Tapa in Korea Certificate as well as a round-trip flight ticket to Spain sponsored by British Airways.
Paradigma was the first restaurant to serve its tapa, a classic, Spanish Omelette (Tortilla de Patatas) presented with cherry tomatoes and alioli sauce.
The second restaurant, Terreno, served a tapa which allured the Korean guests as its main ingredient was marinated pork belly, one of the most common ingredients in Korean gastronomy. However, the tapa recreated a traditional Spanish dish, “Guisantes con jamón” with a gourmet and more sophistic twist.
The third restaurant, Spain Club, served the tapa “Poached eggs with potatoes” which allured the Spanish guests as it used two of the main ingredients in Spanish cuisine.
The fourth restaurant, Sobremesa, surprised the guests with a recreation of a spring-like garden tapa. “Sobremesa Garden” tapa used in-season ingredients such us mushroom, potatoes, carrots, asparagus etc to simulate a veggie-based tapa. The fifth and final restaurant, The Xef, served a high quality Norway lobster imported from Jeju Island (cigala) carpaccio.
The guest, along the tapas, could taste IBERKO’s jamón, Bonilla a la vista’s potato chips, Monte Real wines, and Estrella Damm beer and Sureo sangria both sponsored by Muse International all during the afternoon.
After the tasting, all guest voted for the best tapa of the afternoon. Terreno and its Pork belly with peas won the contest. As Terreno’s chef received the certificate for the 2018 Spanish Tapa in Korea, the Ambassador and ESCCK Secretary General handled him the prize: a round-trip flight ticket to Spain.
Following the prize delivery, all the chefs who participated received an Estrella Damm and a La Chinata cosmetics set. Both brands brought gift sets of their products to give away in a lucky draw throughout the afternoon. The Tapas Tour (Ruta de la Tapas) prize, a round-trip flight ticket to Spain sponsored by British Airways was given to its winner, Yunseok Kang who was invited to the event.
During the closing ceremony, the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Korea presented its new membership, Gourmet Pass.
